Screencastify: A Free Screen Recorder Extension for Google Chrome

12/28/2017

For any teacher or technology leader who has ever needed to record your screen, you know that this can sometimes be a more difficult task than imagined. Fortunately, tools like Screencastify make this process incredibly simple and straightforward. For anyone using a Chrome browser, you can install Screencastify’s free extension, and quickly begin creating screencasts. While the free plan does have some limitations, compared to other options, you can still do quite a bit. Let’s take a look!
First, let’s discuss pricing. As mentioned above, Screencastify offers a free plan, that can do most (if not everything) teachers would need. Alternatively, they also offer a $2 a month plan that gives you some additional features:

Additionally, if you’re looking at Screencastify for an entire school or district, the team offers site licenses that include COPPA/FERPA compliance as well. You can request a quote from their team for more information on what this plan would look like.

Moving on to actually using Screencastify, you can get started by installing their Chrome extension. Once it’s installed, you just have to click the Screencastify plugin logo to setup your initial recording settings.
Even though Screencastify is a Chrome extension, you’re still able to record your desktop, and other applications outside of your browser window as well. You even have the option to embed a recording for your webcam in the corner of the screen recording, if you would like to show your face at the same time as the screencast.

One of the best features of Screencastify is that you’re able to pause and resume your screencast as you’re creating it, even at the free plan level.
This is so helpful in case you need to make changes, open a new application, or create any adjustments during the recording process without needing to start back over.

Plus, Screencastify allows you to save your recording directly to your hard drive, or to Google Drive. And you can easily share out your recording to Google Classroom and YouTube, regardless of your plan level.
If you’re on the premium version, you also get the ability to remove the Screencastify watermark, edit the video, and export the video as a .mp4 or .gif.

Overall, Screencastify is one of the most simple, easy-to-use screencasting tools I’ve ever worked with. Plus, the fact that they offer so much functionality at the free level is wonderful to see.
If you or your school is looking for a friendly screencasting option, that easily integrates with Google Drive and Google Classroom, and can also be COPPA/FERPA compliant, I absolutely recommend checking out Screencastify.

I received a premium Screencastify account for testing purposes.

Is this a student friendly resource? I teach 6th grade and am looking for more ways for students to show mastery of their knowledge. I was thinking this would be a great tool for them to show their skills.

Hi Chelsie,
Absolutely! That's a wonderful idea, and as long as they have a device with the Chrome browser, they can use it!

This seems like a great tool for secondary level students to utilize. I've been looking for a tool that doesn't require any programs to download. Is it easy to install extensions? I also really like that the free version seems like it would be plenty for my students.

Hi Jess,
In general, it's very easy to install extensions. That being said, it depends on what your school allows for student computers - in same cases, the ability to install extensions might not be enabled. So I'd recommend testing with a student login/computer before having all your students install it, just to make sure it works all right with your school settings!

Screencastify Lite is an easy-to-use screen recorder for Chrome.

As you'll guess from the name, it's the free version of 20 Euro commercial product, and comes with two significant restrictions: a large Screencastify logo watermark, and a maximum 10 minute recording time. But if you can live with that, there are plus points.

Screencastify Free Vs Premium

The program can record either your desktop or a Chrome tab, for instance, with microphone, tab or system audio.

Although they're not set by default, you can configure keyboard shortcuts to start/ stop, pause and resume playback.

Recordings may be saved locally or direct to Google Drive, or shared on YouTube.

If you do decide to upgrade, the full version also supports trimming, cropping and other basic video editing tools.

Verdict:

Screencastify Free Time Limit

Screencastify Lite worked well for us, but the watermark and 10 minute length limit mean it's not suitable for any serious applications.
